Drought Watch in Effect for Eastern Maryland

Maryland’s Rural Legacy Program Preserves 1,209 Acres Easements in Baltimore, Dorchester, St. Mary’s and Worcester Counties

The State of Maryland has added 1,209 acres to its permanently protected rural landscape, eliminating 100 development rights in four counties. Governor Martin O’Malley and the Board of Public Works today approved funding to preserve the land, located in Baltimore, Dorchester, St. Mary’s and Worcester Counties, through nine Rural Legacy easements.

Backyard Buffers Program on the Lower Eastern Shore

University of Maryland Extension is partnering with Maryland DNR Forest Service to offer the Backyard Buffer Program to the Lower Eastern Shore. This program is designed to assist homeowners who have a stream or other waterway on or adjacent to their property to create a streamside buffer of native trees and shrubs.

Maryland’s Rural Legacy Program Preserves 689 Acres

The State of Maryland has added nearly 700 acres to its permanently protected rural landscape, extinguishing 52 development rights in four counties. Governor Martin O’Malley today announced Board of Public Works’ approval of five separate transactions in the Little Pipe Creek, Mid-Maryland Frederick, Coastal Bays and Dividing Creek Rural Legacy Areas.

Shellfish Harvesting Restrictions Lifted in Some Maryland Waterways

The Maryland Department of the Environment is lifting shellfish harvesting restrictions for portions of waterways around the state due to recent evaluations showing decreased levels of bacteria. The reclassifications are effective today.

Delmarva Author New Children’s Book has National Release

The book introduces young readers to Ruby the Roly Poly Ladybug, who loves to roll herever she goes. Sometimes her rolling gets her into trouble, especially when she falls into a hole.

One Person Missing After Small Plane Crash off Smith Island

Maryland State Police, Natural Resources Police, and US Coast Guard resources are on the scene of the crash of a small plane in the waters of the Chesapeake Bay off Smith Island tonight and investigators are interviewing the pilot who swam ashore from the wreckage.
