Easterseals Delaware & Maryland’s Eastern Shore employee, Teyanna Bailey, of Selbyville, DE, has been recognized as one of the top five Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) in Delaware for her leadership in supporting people with disabilities. “To win the DSP Leader award means so much. To me it means I’ve listened to the voices of my participants and tended to their needs,” Bailey said. “A lot of times people look at having a disability as a disadvantage when it’s not. There is always an advantage to it. Those who have disabilities see the world in a different light, and it’s really a great opportunity that they allow others to see it from their viewpoint.”

Direct Support Professionals are the people who work as direct care workers, in-home support workers, and personal attendants to ensure that people with disabilities are able to live and work more independently and in community settings. Bailey and her fellow honorees were selected by an independent committee brought together in celebration of “National Direct Support Professional’s Recognition Week.”

“Teyanna is a very outgoing and passionate DSP. She always gives her best and encourages others to do their best,” Rhonda Mercie, Easterseals IDS program supervisor, says. “Teyanna’s peers look up to her and seem to confide in her when facing difficult times. She is a great team player and motivator. Teyanna is a great example of a LEADER!”

Bailey received the “Leader” award, which recognizes a DSP who “embraces and advances the vision for the future of his/her organization or profession and leads by example.”
